Akt4: STRAPSHARRYS AUTODROM UND DREAMBOYS LACHBÜHNE

Akt4: STRAPSHARRYS AUTODROM AND DREAMBOYS LACHBÜHNE

Driving a car without a license: Harry Troste, better known as Strapsharry, was a dazzling scene figure in 1980s West Berlin. Not only did he run an autodrome on the site of today's Topography of Terror, he also ran the Dreamboys Lachbühne - an important springboard for drag artists of the time. Throughout his 94-year life, Strapsharry was a master of ironic self-dramatization and one of the city's few openly queer entrepreneurs. In the audio portrait, former performer Andrea Mohr and Lachbühnen regular Axel remember Strapsharry and his work between trashy cabaret and junky cars.

[00:00:06] Kommen Sie rein. Sind schon richtig. Wenn wir schneller wollen damit. Guten Abend.

Axel [00:00:38] Also ich bin Axel.

Axel [00:00:54] Bin Geburtsjahrgang 61, also hatte ich ungefähr mein Coming out in Berlin, so um 1978/79.

[00:10:20] Zarah Leander Fade-out.

[00:00:06] Come on in. You're right. If we want to go faster with it. Good evening

Andrea [00:00:31] My name is Andrea Mohr. I performed on Dreamboy's stage with Strapsharry for two years.

Axel [00:00:38] So I'm Axel. I was born in West Berlin.

Andrea [00:00:42] I worked in the service department before or in the cloakroom and lighting. I did a few jobs there at the Lachbühne and ended up stuck on stage.

Axel [00:00:54] I was born in 61, so I had my coming out in Berlin around 1978/79.

Andrea [00:01:04] Actually, I'm still doing these gigs today, but not at the Lachbühne anymore.

Axel [00:01:08] And that's why I knew a lot of bars and discos in old West Berlin, of course.

Andrea [00:01:15] I call myself Miss Mandy and together with my partner we call ourselves the Fab Sisters from Fabulous.

[00:01:27] Original music from the Lachbühne We were very different artists.

Andrea [00:01:34] There were two other women on stage besides me, like in Chez Nous or something like that. It wasn't with a lot of feathers or anything like that. It was simply a stage for artists who wanted to see if they were suitable for the stage.

Axel [00:01:47] So strapsharry's stages were a bit trashy and for many people it was more of a springboard in the hope that they would be discovered for some other shop.

Axel [00:01:57] I started with him in 83 or 84 and then I was with him in the Lachbühne until 86 or 87. Let's just say I'm very grateful to Harry that he gave me the chance. When I met him, I had a huge amount of respect for him. We always had rehearsals on Tuesdays, so I went to him and told him that I would like to perform here and can I show you something? And he yes, do you have anything there? I said well I would have to put on makeup. Yeah, get ready then. Yes, and then I was done and then I performed my Memories on stage. And then I was done. And then was dead silence. And I thought God could just drive it home all the way back because no one said anything. All three of them sat there and just looked at me and didn't say anything. And then I stood there and now? Yes, of course you're in. Yes and said Harry then go up to technology and see that you can get four more pieces that you have mastered by then. He simply trusted me to do that and I thought it was crazy. Yes, I had never been on stage before. And I had to walk around wearing a red and white striped bathing suit like in 1900 and come on stage with balloons in the front and back. But the balloons were then popped for me in the course of a few minutes. It was the opening. I was so excited to get on stage, but I came out, I saw the headlights, I saw the people in front of me, I froze. And then someone pushed me from behind and then it was good again. Then I moved on and then I left.

[00:03:36] I'd like to apologize in advance for all the talk I've been having this evening. I talk a lot, a lot of rubbish. And I'm not even blonde.

Andrea [00:03:46] You must be funny, you must be funny, you must be funny. We didn't understand it back then. We all wanted to be beautiful. Today I understand very well that people just want to laugh and not just want to see something nice. That, of course, we were annoyed when we raged backwards like that. Then we had a handbag, we put something in it, then he got it ironed over his head correctly, but then he was pretty quiet afterwards. He also threw me out seven times during the time I was with him and brought me back seven times because he realized that I was a woman, that I actually had no business with him on stage. And then find out seven times again, crap but it's missing, we need it because she knows so many playbacks. He then brought me back every time.

Strapsharry [00:04:32] I'm probably the only one in the world. I don't think there is anyone who has the courage to walk around the street in suspenders.

[00:04:41] Strapsharry is an exception, at least among men. But is that really erotic?

Andrea [00:04:50] Harry was truly an original.

Axel [00:04:53] It was such a unique piece in Berlin. He showed up everywhere with his boys.

Andrea [00:04:58] He has already stood out due to his appearance.

Axel [00:05:02] In clothes. Today, you would say that he had something like a corporate identity or his trademark.

Andrea [00:05:07] I've only ever seen him in summer and winter, in shorts, white shorts, T-shirts, red stockings and suspenders.

Axel [00:05:16] He always walked around in white jeans cut off like this and then always had red ones, mostly red ones. Something like a knit stocking with suspender straps like this.

Andrea [00:05:26] The reason for this was that he was with the Boy Scouts as a child and they got into the rain during a hike and stuck at a monastery. And the nuns, they didn't know how to help themselves other than to give the boys dry things. And those were red stockings with suspenders. And then he stuck on these stockings, and so he walked around wearing these stockings even at minus ten degrees.

Axel [00:05:55] Who worked in the shop, his boys, they were then mostly, I know what, 18 19 20 25, they must have worked in the shop and were traveling with him, they all had to wear the same outfit all the time. They always looked like the five-time Jacob Sisters.

Andrea [00:06:12] So he also invited us to his house from time to time or made dinner and then always had his Mäuschen with him, his friends that he had. It was always Mäuschen, Mäuschen, Micha or Mäuschen I don't know. And he had Mäuschen Micha for quite a long time. These were always quite young guys, estimated to be in their early mid-20s, with whom he then dated. He just loved young men (laughs).

Axel [00:06:42] He never, as far as I can remember, he never wandered around the area alone. I think he also had a relatively eye-catching big car and then he always drove it, I would say, a bit of an advertising tour. And that was, of course, noticeable when he always appeared there with his three or four companions. And that was, of course, the older gay men in particular. It was nice when he arrived there as an old gay man with lots of young boys and they were always dressed relatively shrill and also tuned around a bit like that.

[00:07:20] Car horrons.

Axel [00:07:21] His autodrome was at Anhalter Bahnhof. It had two pillars. One had nothing to do with gay life. I even knew that as a child when I drove by there with my father. He said: Here you can drive a car without a driver's license.

Andrea [00:07:35] I can't even say how long Harry had that. He didn't talk about that, even with the disco. At some point, it simply wasn't anymore. And then that was it. It was very difficult for him to separate it.

Axel [00:07:47] So I knew that a lot of people went there by car. He then sometimes sat at the cash register in the morning. You could already see that from the outside. So afterwards when I knew he was gay. Then, of course, you also looked, what is he doing in this thing? And then he sat there in his suspenders at the cash register from time to time and did the shop in the morning and then went to his gay shops in the evening. He also had a disco. So there were some wooden shacks on this autodrome, because the autodrome was actually on a site that was a rubble plot, actually a dead no man's land. The only thing that was around the corner was that there was also the first gay sauna in Berlin, the Apollo Sauna. They also had their first shop across the street. That's why there were gay people in this corner from time to time. But the Autodrom wasn't a gay event.

[00:08:37] From the very beginning in his career and career. Join me in looking forward to a Zarah Leander parody suggested. Presented and performed by your our strapsharry. Zarah Leander.

[00:09:02] Original music Lachbühne: Zarah Leander. I know a miracle is going to happen again.

Andrea [00:09:10] So the original Lachbühne, which was on Bundesallee. That low-rise building. Harry lost the Lauchbühne in Bundesallee because he no longer paid the rent. Did you dismiss him. That was a shame, because it was a really great room and 100 people fit in. And when Harry had to get out of the house, we moved to Anhalter Bahnhof. In this skyscraper, it was pretty high up. I had a show upstairs after the fall of the wall and was then able to watch the fireworks at the Brandenburg Gate. That was brilliant. Yes, then, among other things, we were at Walter Schreiber Platz once or twice. Harry had a hard rock disco there. It was a total contrast to all the travesty stories Harry made. It was really hard rock and we had a bit of concern when we were supposed to perform there, whether we were going to get banged up there or whether it would work. The second one happened, it arrived and we had a great evening. Yes, then we were also at Tempelhof Airport, where Harry was already over 90 and otherwise that was that afterwards... In the end, we even drove into the surrounding area because we were booked there. But that wasn't actually the Laughbühne anymore.

[00:10:20] Zarah Leander fade-out.
